We have all been through a phase or maybe still trapped inside a phase wherein makeup just does not seem to work out for us. Rather than enhancing our features, we always end up with a cringe-worthy finish that sometimes we do not realize ourselves. So before we end up being the epitome of horror in the eyes of makeup enthusiasts, here are the seven deadly makeup sins that need immediate repenting and correction. May the god of makeup bless our souls!
1. Boxed Eyebrows on Fleek?
This the most common mistake there is. Whether you are commuting, roaming around the mall, or looking in front of the mirror, drawn and unnatural boxed eyebrows are always around to haunt you. As the “full and thick eyebrows” trend circulates in social media, so does the misguided trend wherein makeup followers blur the line between natural and drawn eyebrows. In an effort to fill-in the eyebrows, some of us commit the mistake of squared-off inner corners wherein the eyebrows end up looking like a rectangle or an unflattering box seating right above the eyes.
Solution: We have to acknowledge that every facial structure equates to a different set of brows. To achieve natural looking brows, it is advised that you visit a trusted eyebrow salon and get your eyebrows groomed and shaped so that you will have a guide when you start doing your own eyebrows. In filling your brows, used an angled brush and lightly outline the top and bottom edges only. With light strokes, fill in the bald spots following the direction of your hair growth. Once you are satisfied with your outline, comb your brows with a spoolie. Viola! Say goodbye to drawn rectangular brows and say hello to eyebrows on fleek!
2.“You can never go wrong with red lipstick” —LIES!
Red lips have always been a go-to lipstick choice. However, with a variety of red shades, it is a high probability that you could go wrong with a red lipstick. A bright red lipstick may look good on her, but not for you. The mistake here lies in choosing the wrong shade of red. Every skin tone has a corresponding shade of red that complements it. You just have to find the right one.
Solution: Swatch! We have been blessed with a palette of red lipsticks. There are orange reds, blue reds, glossy reds, and subtle reds. In finding the perfect red lipstick, swatch these different hues of red and judge which shade works best with your undertone. If you are still skeptical with your choice, consult a red lipstick chart that is always available on the internet. If you are bored with red tones, then feel free to explore other lipstick shades. Who knows? Maybe you look way better with nude lips, or dark plum shades. The key solution here is to explore your choices until you find the right one.
3.Slapped Cheek Syndrome
No, I am not pertaining to the actual infection common in children. This is about the disease that makeup enthusiasts are often diagnosed with. In achieving the Mestiza, or rosy look, we sometimes go overboard and end up looking either like a clown or a television drama’s antagonist that has just been slapped by the “legal wife”. The mistake is caused by three factors: wrong shade of blush, incorrect application, and unblended blush.
Solution: If you really want to achieve that youthful and healthy look, then all you have to do is to practice these three easy steps: First, select a blush that works best with your complexion and skin type. Second, lightly sweep the brush on the apples of your cheeks toward the side of your face. You could also apply a small amount of blush on the bridge of your nose and on your chin for a more natural look. Third, tame the color of the blush by applying translucent powder along the cheekbones
4. Foundation Fiasco
Let’s be honest, at some point we wanted to either have a lighter or darker skin tone. Since tanning and bleaching requires a lot of time and money, we figured that a foundation with the shade of our dreams will serve as a quick fix. WRONG! Unless you plan on applying foundation on all visible parts of your body, the wrong foundation shade will make you look like a head attached to the wrong body. Again, every skin tone has its own shade that will complement with it. It’s written in the nonexistent makeup bible. Live it, Preach it.
Solution: The solution is simple: try swatching a variety of foundation on your skin. The shade that blends well with your skin tone is obviously the right one. If you do not want to throw away the wrong foundation, you could always use it to highlight and contour. If the foundation is lighter than your skin tone then it is perfect for brightening the parts of your face that naturally hits the light. If the foundation is darker than your skin tone, you could always use it for contouring.
5.Eyeshadow Explosion
Have you ever felt excited whenever you open an eyeshadow palette? It feels like the rainbow goddess puked and stored all the bright glittery goodness inside a box. I know how it feels to be all giddy that you want to apply all the colors on your eyelids all at once, but trust me, you would not want that. You will probably think that the mistake is wearing the wrong colors together or rocking a neon orange eyeshadow in broad daylight , but the mistake is actually caused by the wrong method of applying your eyeshadow.
Solution: I could easily advise you to wear the right colors at the right place and at the right time, but that would make this solution boring and restraining. The truth is, we are all free to choose whatever shade we want. All we have to do is to experiment until you find the right blend. Another tip is to use an eyeshadow color that would serve as a perfect transition color. Also, do not forget to use a blending brush in taming harsh lines and in blending the parts where the eyeshadow colors meet. I repeat, the key solution here is to BLEND, BLEND, BLEND.
6. Over-lining the Eyes
While some are struggling with their winged eyeliners, some are committing the mistake of lining the whole eye and boldly winging it. As a result, a hybrid between a panda and a cat is born. It is both unflattering and it will make your eyes look smaller.
Solution: Start with thin strokes in lining your eyes so that mistakes can be easily removed. Remember to apply eyeliner only on the upper lash line. Once you are satisfied with the outline, darken the lines moderately. If you wish to apply eyeliner on your lower lash line, use a pencil or eyeshadow in order to avoid harsh lines and for easier blending. In addition, the eyeliner must only be applied on the outer corner of the lower lash line for a more natural finish. To enhance the look, apply a coat of mascara.
7. Makeup is your confidence booster
Although this has nothing to do with the improper way of applying makeup or choosing the wrong shade for your complexion, this false notion about makeup needs to stop. For at least once we have heard someone say the all too popular quote: “Let’s be confident in our own skin” or “natural beauty is better” while shaming the makeup-obsessed and their self-esteem. For them makeup is a form of concealing insecurities and altering appearances. For those who still believe in this notion, here is the truth: Wearing makeup is not an automatic indication of low self-esteem. Yes, some may be using highlighters and contour sticks, but they may be using these products not for altering but for emphasizing their God-given features. Furthermore, makeup, for some, is a form of art or a source of happiness. Who are we to take away one’s artistic outlet and happiness?
Solution: Instead of shoving your opinion to someone who thinks otherwise, we should all learn to accept the different preferences when it comes to makeup. Some may like it, some may not. Let others live the way they want to live and always remember that confidence never relies on what you are or not wearing and applying. We are all confidently beautiful with or without makeup.
